The Richmond Street overpass over Interstate 41 is set to close on May 19, 2026, marking a significant development in the ongoing I-41 expansion project. This closure is part of a broader initiative to reconstruct 23 miles of the interstate between Grand Chute and De Pere, aiming to enhance the quality of life for residents and commuters alike. The project, which will continue through 2030, involves transforming the mainline from four lanes to six, adding auxiliary and collector-distributor lanes, and reconstructing several interchanges, overpasses, and underpasses.
The interchange will reopen as a diverging diamond interchange this fall, mirroring the recent completion of similar work at Northland Avenue and Ballard Road. This innovative design promises to improve traffic flow and safety, addressing the challenges posed by the current configuration. The project's scope extends beyond the interchange, with various quality-of-life improvements being implemented along the route.
Detours are advised for drivers, with WisDOT recommending that drivers take either a southern route via Northland Avenue or a northern route via Edgewood Drive, followed by an eastern detour to cross or enter the interstate at Ballard Road. However, it's important to note that nearby crossings, such as Meade Street in Appleton and Gillett Street and Lynndale Drive in Grand Chute, lack access to the interstate and are primarily overpasses or underpasses. Furthermore, ongoing work associated with the I-41 project is expected to impact traffic flow on these routes.
The closure of the Richmond Street bridge will significantly impact traffic, with approximately 19,000 drivers per day using the segment of Richmond south of the interchange. This number decreases to 16,900 as you approach the roundabout at Northland, while 14,400 drivers use the segment of Richmond between the interstate and Edgewood. Additionally, around 5,400 to 7,900 drivers use the on- and off-ramps each day.
The I-41 expansion project is not limited to the Richmond Street bridge closure. Other closures and construction activities are planned throughout the Fox Cities. For instance, the northbound on-ramp to I-41 from Wisconsin Avenue in Grand Chute closed on April 27, 2026, until the fall, with lane reductions also occurring on Wisconsin Avenue under the interstate. Overpasses over I-41 on French Road and Buchanan Street in Little Chute are temporarily closed for bridge replacement, with plans to reopen them this summer. In Wrightstown, French Road, which becomes East Frontage Road as it crosses the Outagamie/Brown county line, is closed until late fall, and Outagamie County U, which crosses East Frontage Road/French Road, remains closed through mid-summer.
These closures and construction activities are subject to change, and the public is advised to stay informed through the official project website, i41project.wisconsindot.gov. The I-41 expansion project is a significant undertaking with far-reaching implications for the region's transportation infrastructure and the daily lives of residents and commuters. It is a testament to the ongoing efforts to modernize and improve the efficiency of our transportation networks.
